This module is designed to give researchers an insight into the career management skills required for the employment in the food industry.

Skills auditing, setting objectives, creative decision making, consultancy skills, dealing with controversy and career planning are all areas in which researchers could benefit from having a comprehensive understanding. Module Content: • Innovation and idea incubation • Effective Objective Setting, identifying developmental needs for professional goals • Skills audits, self-assessment, professional goal setting, • Presentation Skills, the tools and techniques of preparing and delivering effective presentations, Clarifying your contribution and creative working, social media • Consultancy case study: • Written applications, interviewing, • Controversy workshop • Interview practice

Target audience:

All Agri-Food Researchers but in particular any researchers who will be completing their PhD in late 2018 or 2019.

Learning outcomes and impact:

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: • Understand one’s behaviour and impact on others when working in teams. • Demonstrate flexibility and open-mindedness. • Demonstrate self-awareness and the ability to identify one’s own training need.s • Demonstrate tactics for assessing and marketing “VCR factor” - visibility, credibility and relevance. • Understand how to initiate and build extensive professional networks – both online and offline, in a global economy. • Understand how to establish and take control of your digital footprint. • Feel confident to stand and deliver before any size group. • Use eye contact, gestures and body language for maximum effect and develop and organise a presentation to impart key information.

Module delivery:

mixture of lectures, workshops, classroom activities along with CV writing class and practice job interview.

Module assessment:

Participants will develop a personalised career plan and submit the tools (self-reflection, CV, career strategy etc) to support the implimentation of their plan.
